'Materialists' puts matchmakers back in the spotlight, here are our five favorites
In the new romantic dramedy “Materialists,” Dakota Johnson plays a professional matchmaker caught between two men, the “unicorn” wealthy guy (Pedro Pascal) and the working-class ex-boyfriend (Chris Evans).
But what’s a professional matchmaker to do when they’re the one caught in the love triangle? Turn to the services of some of cinema’s most well-known matchmakers, of course!
Yente-Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
One of the driving plot threads in the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” is Tevye trying to marry off his five daughters, and here Yente (played by Molly Picon in the movie) comes in to help—for a fee. The character even has a song dedicated to her, sung by Tevye’s girls, who aren’t the biggest fans of her efforts.
Emma-Emma (2020)
Jane Austen’s novel, “Emma,” has been adapted many times over the years, and the 2020 version starring Anya Taylor-Joy hews pretty close to the source material as it follows Emma Woodhouse, a young woman playing unofficial matchmaker to people in her life. Of course, Emma isn’t as good at the job as she thinks, and things become further complicated by her own feelings.
Cher-Clueless (1995)
“Clueless” takes the basic plot elements of “Emma” and updates them to 90s Los Angeles as Cher (Alicia Silverstone in her breakout role) meddles in the lives of her teachers, friends, and stepbrother (Paul Rudd).
Dolly Levi-Hello, Dolly! (1969)
Dolly Levi, played in the 1969 movie by Barbra Streisand, is a matchmaker looking for her own match with “half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder (Walter Matthau). As all matchmakers seem to find on film, the quest is further complicated by the other couples in their sphere and their own feelings.
The Parent Trap (1961, 1998)
Both versions of “The Parent Trap” feature precocious twins (Hayley Mills in the original, Lindsay Lohan in the remake) doing their best to get just one couple back together: their mom and dad.
